"From Clay to Marble"

Gabriele Rovai latest work: a Book to learn how you can make a statue.

"Rovai has been a pleasant colleague with whom I have shared many years of teaching at Liceo Srtistico in Carrara where hr taught Plastic disciplines from 1963 to 1993 contributing to the artistic formatin of many youths. He's a shy, stern-looking and reserved man, almost surfly but blessed with a deep sensibility and a technical capability which allow him to express himself in several fields. Besides being a sculptor he is also a sailing boat designer, loves the sea, the nature, the great and uncontaminated spaces where it is possible to open oneself to yearning feelings, savouring pleasures in your soul thaqt only the freedom of the mind and the fantasy can give us where youu can feel free with your spirit and fantasy. He used to tell me that as a child he had found himself dealing with marble for this father and grandfather worked in this fieldand that it was just Grandpa Ettore who taught him the first principles of such a hard and fascinating trade.

Statue

In his study in Pietrasanta he keeps jealously the ancient tools: mallets, chisels...which he still show with pride and that are still used since in the manufactoring of marble very little is changed: the hardest and most demanding of all the plastic materials wants nearly a physical crash, a violent, painful inpact in order to give back a dug, evidenced, thoroughly-thought shape. The results highlight the honesty of a job led with technical capability and extreme tenacity. His shape are essential, vigorous, powerful, with well-shaped and wide plans, well defined by linear passages. Watching his works, the perceived effect is one of great nature, witness of the will and ability to perpetuate the strict and serene beauty of tradition."
